Shakti Scheme - Free Bus Rides For Women

In a previous blog post last week, I shared about the word "power" or "shakti" and how it is synonymous with men.

The word "Shakti" is also used along with the word "Mission" i.e.- "Mission Shakti".

This is to denote women power as "Mission Shakti" represents women and their contribution.

We have Mission Shakti in Odisha. Women Self-Help Groups i.e. SHGs are involved. The aim is employment and good opportunities for women to realize their potential and attain goals.

Recently, another political party was elected in a large southern state of India.

One of their poll promises was the "Shakti" scheme.

Stay Strong!

What is strength?

That we see being exhibited by action-heroes and heroines, right?

Despite being a feminist, I have used the word- "heroes" first and then "heroines" in the above sentence.

Ever wonder how and why the very words- "action", "strong", "strength", "power" etc are associated with men?

Aren't there more action-heroes than action-heroines?

Batman, Spiderman, Antman, Phantom, Superman...

vs

Supergirl, Wondergirl...

"The strongest man in the world is he who stands most alone."

Supreme Court Decision and Trending Divorce Photoshoot

Two trends were noted this May 1st, 2023- both were about Divorce.

One was the Supreme Court ruling.

The other was a viral divorce photoshoot posted by an empowered artist.

Source: Instagram @shalu2626

On 1st May 2023, the Supreme Court (SC) ruled that it can grant divorce under Article 142 of the Constitution and has the discretionary powers to dissolve a matrimonial alliance that has broken down irretrievably. As per the Five-Judge Supreme Court Bench of Justices SK Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, AS Oka, Vikram Nath and JK Maheshwari:

Grant of divorce (in case of irretrievable breakdown of marriage is not a matter of right, but a discretion to be exercised (by the SC) with great care & caution, keeping in mind several factors ensuring ‘complete justice’ is done to both parties.

What Happened This Women's Day and Holi

Women are celebrated mostly in the month of March.

Why? International Women's Day is on March 8th.

All are reminded of the accomplishments of women on International Women's Day.

Women have shaped and play an important role in shaping our culture and society. They must be celebrated everyday.

Brand advertisements target women and men.

This year, in 2023, we celebrated Holi and Women's Day together as both were on the same date.

There were extra advertisements- some combined both women and Holi.

There were some negative incidents.

SHE – Women Characters in Hindi Cinema

Whether in real life or reel life, She/they, the woman/women, play many roles and have been heroines.

She has always been a part of movies- both in front of screen and behind the scenes.

Over the decades, there have been many women associated with cinema.

While we acknowledge the “Father of Indian Cinema”, the mothers get left behind.

However, the word CINEMA can never be possible without “MA” (Mother).

We have come a long way from the age when even female roles in movies were enacted by men.

Today, entertainment industry is also ruled by women.

Like she, Reshma/Silk, based on actress Silk Smitha, confidently states in her epic dialogue in the movie- The Dirty Picture:

“Three things are needed for a movie’s success- Entertainment, Entertainment and Entertainment; And I am Entertainment”.

She is a Queen

Apart from the rule of Kings and heroes in movies like- Raja Harischandra, Baahubali and Shahenshah, we have also seen the rule of Queens and heroines like Razia Sultan, Manikarnika (Rani Lakshmibai) and Queen!

Don't Call Me Mausi- Kareena Kapoor's Character In K3G Movie

Today happens to be actress Kareena Kapoor Khan's birthday.

Recently, I re-watched her two decades old superhit Hindi movie- Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Ghum’  (K3G).

K3G was one of the early movies in her illustrious career.

Kareena Kapoor's performance in this blockbuster emotional family-drama by Dharma Productions is memorable.

She plays an ultra-modern, glamorous and smart college-going girl- Pooja or Poo, who lives in London with her sister, brother-in-law, nephew, and relative.

Poo does not like to be addressed as "Mausi".

The following are two scenes from K3G movie:

How A Son India Got Mother Arrested And Saved A Tribal Woman

EVIL WOMAN Seema Patra, TRIBAL WOMAN Sunita, & SON INDIA Ayushman

We were/are rejoicing that a highly-qualified, experienced, and competent “Tribal Woman”, Droupadi Murmu Madam, has now been elected as our nation’s President, (More in my posts- Vocal For Local - President Droupadi Murmu, President Droupadi Murmu - Tribal Woman and More,  Droupadi Murmu – Much More Than Her Tribal Woman Identity).

But, it is shocking to see the gross treatment meted out to another tribal woman, a domestic help named Sunita.

The former’s struggles and accomplishments are awe-inspiring; the latter’s experiences are numbingly jaw-dropping.

While so many citizens hailed and celebrated Murmu Madam’s selection and election, many voices express their stern condemnation to Sunita’s ordeal caused by her employer, Seema Patra.

Who is Seema Patra?

Jharkhand's ex-IAS officer's wife and BJP ex-politician - State Convener, Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, Jharkhand BJP (She has been suspended by the party now).

“Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” - a seemingly strong woman, who supposedly stands up for the causes of women, correct?

President Droupadi Murmu - Tribal Woman And More

The largest democracy got its 15th President on 25 July 2022.

What comes to your mind when you think of the new President?

First “Tribal President”?

“Second Woman President of India”?

“Tribal Woman President”?

President Droupadi Murmu is much more.

Murmu Madam is not just representative of the 8.6 % tribal population of India, or the 48.46% female population of India (Figures as per the 2011 Census); rather she is India’s President.

In the nation where a Chaiwala is the Prime Minister, the President is this self-made citizen belonging to “the poorest of the poor family” from a “small village”, and ex-Teacher, Councillor, MLA, Minister, and Governor!

Break The Bias #BreakTheBias

On March 8th, we observe “International Women's Day” worldwide.

Apart from Mother's Day that is celebrated in May, this is one day to celebrate women.

Multi-Tasker and Balancer

A woman balances various roles at home and at work. Just like the Dashabhuja (ten-armed) Goddess Durga, she is a multi-tasker. Every woman is expected to be a super-woman.

Even if she is a working-woman, she is supposed to handle everything- right from cooking, laundry, childcare, grocery shopping…

If she is a stay-at-home mother or “housewife”, she is looked down upon. House-work is never a paid activity and it is not taken into consideration to calculate GDP.

Liability and Second-class citizens

When a girl is born, she is considered a “liability” and entire family starts saving for her wedding. The aim is to get her married as soon as she attains marriageable-age.

A woman is not just a property- an item to be bought or owned or used or exchanged or given away. Is she “Lakshmi” (the goddess of wealth)? Her in-laws demand and get a hefty dowry from her parents during marriage.

Who cares about her dreams or independence?

In many families, women are treated as second-class citizens.

Agriculture and handicrafts employ the maximum number of citizens in our nation. Though there are so many women farmers and artisans/weavers, their identities and voices remain suppressed. The male-member, who earns money, is considered superior.

Representation of women in politics, government, and in corporate organisations is also less.

Leader, but expected to be Follower

Whatever she does, she is judged and her work is scrutinized.

She is conditioned to think- “Log kya kahengey/sochenge?” – What will people say/think?

Society expects her to be caring and soft-spoken and keep her opinions to herself.

If she comes across as honest, opinionated, and independent, she is disliked.

If she is successful in her profession, she is accused to have adopted “smart” means viz. keeping male bosses “happy”.

If she takes tough decisions for the family, company, state or nation, and exhibits her leadership qualities, thereby making others “follow” her idea/advocacy, men have a problem acknowledging that she is a leader. Why is it assumed that only men can be leaders?

Charlotte Whitton had rightly said-

'Whatever women do they must do twice as well as men to be thought half as good. Luckily, this is not difficult.'

A woman’s hard-work is shamelessly usurped by men, who get to ultimately hog the limelight being projected as the heroes of every story! And such injustice is supported by other men and women, who despite knowing the real “hero”, chose to stay silent about the contribution of the deserving woman-leader or achiever.

Humanity In Full Flow

When there is humanity in full flow,

You'll feel safe & secure & you'll glow!

Walking Nirbhaya* down the street, you know-

Those you meet won't violate or stoop low.

No unruly elements will bother you anywhere.

Untoward cases with girls won't occur or scare.

Experiencing freedom & peace won't be rare.

Humanity will triumph with love & care.

Nirbhaya Case Justice #NirbhayaNyayDivas

On March 20, 2020, four animals were hanged at Tihar Jail. Calling them ‘animals’ is actually an insult to the animal species. As our motherland was relieved of the burden of the four, we breathed a sigh of relief that FINALLY there’s closure to the Nirbhaya Case...
Bharat Mata, Nirbhaya’s parents, Nirbhaya’s lawyer, and Nirbhaya Case followers & supporters now have reason to rejoice.
Efforts have borne fruit. Justice was delayed, but not denied.
March 20 is special as we celebrate the "International Day of Happiness" & Pakhala Dibasa too.
On Spring Equinox, the first day of Spring, we got the happy news FINALLY.
The strong crowd outside the jail cheered.
For us, henceforth the date will also be memorable as - #NirbhayaNyayDivas i.e. the day to commemorate justice for Nirbhaya.
From the past 7 years, we have been thinking why this ‘rarest of rare’ case of 2012 for which capital punishment had been announced in 2013, and that had extensive media coverage, public anger & pressure, law & fast-track court, & President’s support, was taking so long?
Why were the rapists & their lawyers given so many chances to feel victorious time and again?
Why were they allowed to waste precious time of the court?
Why were the dates shifted & new dates getting fixed?
Why new petitions were allowed to be filed by their lawyers again & again?
Who gave the money & support for the rapists’ case? Don’t those people deserve punishment too for siding up with the devils?

Women, Violence And Silence

Top post on IndiBlogger, the biggest community of Indian Bloggers
It is said, 'Silence is golden'.
But, is it really?

Silence may be interpreted in a different way When You Say Nothing At All...

I feel- 'Silence Feeds The Violence'.
Violence is not right. Lord Krishna has said in the Gita that those who suffer injustice are greater culprits than those who commit injustice.

When something terrible is happening, why are people silent-onlookers, rather than protesting?
Embedded image permalink
I have shared this in my poem- 'India Needs Bravehearts'.

For example, if a man is slapping/beating a woman in public, people would rather 'watch the fun',  click photos or take videos, rather than raise their voice or come to the rescue of the damsel-in-distress.

Exciting Pleasure

She opened her eyes, waking up with a throbbing headache and severe body pain.
Finding herself on a bed in a dingy room, she first slipped into her clothes that were scattered on the floor.

Silence Feeds The Violence

They find you- the woman- very weak & an easy target to pick,
Who can be made to dance to their favourite music!
They make you do this & that & to be their 24X7 slave!
You carry the trauma, humiliation & violence to your grave.

They grope emotionally & physically; you bear in silence.
Being the society's scapegoat to no woman makes sense.
A raped woman has no respect in our moral society
You think- 'What'll people say', 'Who'll marry me?'

You had worn a mini-skirt or were covered from head-to-toe,
The result was still the same- what all got to know.
Whatever happened wasn't your fault or invitation at all.
You are the unfortunate 'victim' whose case was judged by all.

The deep cuts, bites, bruises, kicks, tell the real sad story,
Your silence, smile, 'status' adds to the false glory,
Your identity, existence & reasoning is threatened & pained,
You want to scream & tell your tale, but feel chained...

Make In Odisha Unit

It was late evening when we were returning from the India Surf Festival 2016 held at Konark, Odisha, two weeks ago. On our way to Bhubaneswar, on the way, we decided to stop by and visit a woman entrepreneur's unit as they had invited us several times. We called up our contact, the manager, Kedar babu, and he said that he, along with the owner, was available then. He heartily welcomed us and guided us about the route to reach their address.

It was very easy to reach the unit as everyone, we inquired on the way, knew the way! It showed the popularity of the owner, the much-awarded entrepreneur, Smt Meenakshi Prusty. We successfully reached our destination.

Smt Meenakshi Prusty made us feel at home. With the able support of her team- her daughter, Maansi, son-in-law, Kedar babu, and other dedicated members, their unit has been sincerely working & growing.
2nd from Left- Kedar Babu, Centre- Meenakshi Prusty, Extreme Right -Maansi
Smt.Prusty said that she had been busy that month, having to visit Puri almost everyday for the holy Hindu month of Kartika. We were grateful that our timing was right to meet her!

We were impressed by the sight that greeted us in her unit. We found many women busy at work. There were many electronic sewing-machines. Her daughter, Maansi, was also working with the other women.

Breaking Stereotypes #IAmCapable

Be wise- Never judge anyone based on their looks!
From covers, one can't judge the contents of books!

It's like looking for something in front that's actually hidden in the nooks!
69% of men agree that their judgement of women is based on their looks.

'Appearances are deceptive'- what appears isn't always true!
Yet people get influenced by what they 'see' & haven't any clue!

There's more beneath the surface than what can be seen.
Remember that nine-tenths of an ice-berg is unseen.

Being a woman is so tough, having to juggle tasks & filled with tension!
Women have to worry about- looking presentable & also people’s perception.

Passing value judgments seems to be a favourite game.
Taking the role of a judge in such cases is such a shame!

Outfits carry subtle messages that are evident to the minds & eyes of the judges.
Women have to forcibly adhere & act; appearance of women createsimages’.

A woman, who wears Sarees, may have ‘modernity’ in her heart.
Yet she is judged as traditional & backward; not sophisticated or smart!

Poor and wrong judgments cause true harm, mental agony and distress that's real.
64% of women agree that such judgments affect their ability to reach their potential.

Dum Laga Ke Haisha in Hindi means 'Give all your energy'.

Dum Laga Ke Haisha is also the name of  a new endearing and simple romantic-comedy Bollywood movie that I happened to watch on International Women's Day.
It is about the marriage of Prem Prakash Tiwari (Ayushmann Khurrana) and Sandhya Verma (Bhumi Pedneker).

Spoiler-Alert- Note- This post reveals the plot, story and key scenes and lessons from the movie. Please don't read in case you wish to watch the movie.

Discovering Women In Literature And Society

This Post won a top prize in the Kolkata Literary Festival 2015 at Kolkata Book Fair.

Women have been portrayed in different shades. There has been detailed SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis whether in real-life, reel-life, history and literature. There is overlapping too.

Real-Life

True-stories are an inspiration for society, literature and cinema.
Khub ladi mardaani wo to jhaansi wali rani thi” – (Jhansi’s Rani/Queen Lakshmibai fought courageously like a man). Smt. Indira Gandhi was the ‘only man in her cabinet’. I am Malala is about the youngest Nobel Peace-prize winner.

Virginity & Character

This post is one of the Top Posts of 2014 in the list compiled by IndiBlogger.

Virginity means - 'Sexual abstinence before marriage'.
Virginity is sacred as per traditional beliefs, values, culture and religions.
Virginity also means 'purity' (of thoughts and action).

As mythology & history prove, it's perfectly justified if the men lose their virginity, marry one partner, have extra-marital affairs or additional marriages!
But, as per Indian culture, girls/women are not supposed to 'think' about or 'entertain' any other person apart from their spouse...
Married women haven't had a better deal...

Devi Ahalya was cursed and turned into a stone by her angry husband- Gautama Maharishi, when it was not her fault. The King of Gods, Indra, had come disguised as her husband & she had entertained him... Later, Shri Ram freed her from the curse.

Ahalya was the first Panchakanya - ("five virgins"), "archetypes of female chastity" - a group of five icons "whose names are believed to dispel sin when recited".
