Exploring Bollywood Stereotypes And Impact

Indian Bloggers
In Bollywood movies, appearances of the actresses is important.
Hindi films show that heroines are judged based on their looks.
However, the impact is evident in the climax later on as often there is a happy ending!

In the quest to impress prospective in-laws, movies have shown women enthusiastically participating.

In the movie, HOLIDAY, in the first meeting to consider the marriage of the boy & girl (enacted by Akshay Kumar & Sonakshi Sinha), the girl is shown wearing traditional clothes (Salwar kameez) and she had worn a wig to show that she had long hair so as to impress the boy and his family.
Still, the boy rejects the girl citing the following reasons:
1. Girl has one-and-a-half metres long hair & she'll take 6 hours to comb them. In the future, if they have to go out, there will be time-wastage (as she’ll take time to comb her hair!)
2. Girl appears “shy & scared”.
3. Girl appears as though “she has arrived from a village. The boy wants a girl who's smart and stylish.

The above matches the stereotypes:
Long hair – Homely but not ambitious
Saree or Salwar kameez – Aunty or Behenji  (sister)
It doesn’t mean that if a woman has long hair, she is homely and if she is dressed in Salwar-suits or Sarees, she is a “Behenji” (sister) or “Aunty”, who is traditional and backward and looks like a village woman!

Later in the movie, the boy learns that the girl's personality is totally different from what was portrayed when she was paraded during the match-making-visit in front of him & his family.
Impact- When the boy sees the girl's true self, with short-hair and smart personality, he falls in love with her as he is looking for that.

Virginity & Character

This post is one of the Top Posts of 2014 in the list compiled by IndiBlogger.

Virginity means - 'Sexual abstinence before marriage'.
Virginity is sacred as per traditional beliefs, values, culture and religions.
Virginity also means 'purity' (of thoughts and action).

As mythology & history prove, it's perfectly justified if the men lose their virginity, marry one partner, have extra-marital affairs or additional marriages!
But, as per Indian culture, girls/women are not supposed to 'think' about or 'entertain' any other person apart from their spouse...
Married women haven't had a better deal...

Devi Ahalya was cursed and turned into a stone by her angry husband- Gautama Maharishi, when it was not her fault. The King of Gods, Indra, had come disguised as her husband & she had entertained him... Later, Shri Ram freed her from the curse.

Ahalya was the first Panchakanya - ("five virgins"), "archetypes of female chastity" - a group of five icons "whose names are believed to dispel sin when recited".

Bollywood Stubble Songs for PASS!

Bollywood heroines have always been trend-setters. (My Previous Post proves how Clean-Shaven partners have been the choice of Bollywood heroines!)

Romantic songs & movies are easier on our eyes & for heroines too when the hero is Clean-Shaven (& has no stubble)!

Easier to get up close & personal!

If Rishi Kapoor had a stubble, Dimple Kapadia would never sing the song ‘Hum Tum Ek Kamre Mein Band Ho Aur Chaabi Kho Jaye’ (May we both be locked in a room and may the key get lost) in the film ‘Bobby’!

She would rather think may the Stubble get lost first before the room-key!!!

If Salman Khan, Aamir Khan or Shah Rukh Khan had a stubble, all those romantic songs in scenic locales with their leading actresses like Madhuri Dixit, Manisha Koirala, Juhi Chawla, Kajol, Katrina Kaif … etc wouldn’t be as appealing!

Deepika Padukone would rather be a ‘Titli’ (Butterfly) in the same song in the film ‘Chennai Express’ and ‘fly away’ if the hero had a Stubble!!!

After all, if ‘Ram Chahe Leela, Leela Chahe Ram; In Dono Ke Love Mein STUBBLE Ka Kya Kaam?!’ (Ram loves Leela, Leela Loves Ram; What is the role of a STUBBLE in their Love?!)
– Altering the lyrics of the Song in the movie ‘Goliyon Ki RaasLeela- Ram-leela’!

Some More Songs:

Tere Mere Beech Mein, Kaisa Hai Yeh STUBBLE Anjaana…!” (What’s this unknown Stubble between the two of us!
– ‘Ek Dooje Ke Liye’

Tere Mere Beech Mein Kya Hai? STUBBLE!
(What’s there between the two of us? STUBBLE!
- 'Shudh Desi Romance'

Haye Haye Ye Majboori, Yeh STUBBLE Aur Yeh Doori!” (Oh What a drawback, this STUBBLE & this distance!
- 'Roti Kapda Aur Makaan'

Stubble is Smelly, Unhygienic & creates separation/rift/trouble!
Like the Hindi film heroines, even I hate that unclean stubble!
