Power of Worship & Prayer

I pray & believe in the power of worshipping God.

For me, worshipping God = praying.
I feel we can worship anywhere, though being in a Temple, Church, Mosque, Gurudwara etc. certainly helps.

Though I spend very less time in my Puja Room as such, as compared to that spent by the elders in my family, I focus on prayer in that time.
I also believe- 'Work is Worship.'

My Mom used to say, "Give 100% attention to God in the time you pray...What is the point if while praying you are thinking of other worldly things - like the phone-ringing or what you need to cook!"

Prayer & remembering God is dependent on the situation we are in.
If we are happy, there are not many reasons to worship.

Even when I am happy, I pray-
"May the happiness last forever. May God give all of us enough reasons to be happy..."

Here are some reasons why I pray- EVERYONE HAS A REASON TO PRAY

But, when it is problem-time, like the current world scenario, there is an increase in the prayers and more people worship God...

There's a scene in the Hindi movie- 3 Idiots, in which we find, just before the exam-results, students are striking deals with their Gods - "God please let me pass!"- "I will see my female class-mates like my sisters","will offer you milk" etc. :P

These days I am praying a lot more by seeing the news.
Praying that may the departed souls rest in peace, may their loved ones cope up with the tragedy, may we have the strength to survive another day after seeing the sad incidents like rape, violence, bomb & missile-attacks, endless list...

I am praying and wishing & hoping for fantastic superpowers that will enable us to have a trustworthy, peaceful, compassionate & tolerant world so that we can KEEP CALM & be ZEN.

I believe there is great power in Prayer. Faith is important. That pulls people from all over.
We can pray and feel consoled.

"Teri hai zameen, tera aasmaan; Tu bada meherbaan, tu bakshis kar,
sabhi ka hai tu, sabhi tere; khuda mere tu bakshis kar..."

Song from the Hindi movie- Burning Train.

In the movie, when the new train catches fire, all the school-children and passengers travelling in the 'Burning Train', sing the above song that means-

The ground is yours, the sky is yours; You are generous, you save us;
You are everyone's, everyone is yours; Oh My God, you save us..."

When we are faced by a crisis, that time we wish to save ourselves and our loved ones.
We believe worshipping God will help as He can save us.

Even an atheist becomes a believer when his prayers are answered.

Everyone can worship. India is a secular country.

In Hindi movies, miraculous things happen after prayers- like -
1. Lost child in Mela (Fair) is reunited with parents!
2. Blind person regains eyesight!
3. Memory-loss or serious disease or Coma-afflicted person is fully cured!
4. An old lady's sons named Karan & Arjun return as she always prays and says "Mere Karan Arjun aayenge" (My Karan & Arjun will come)
5. Forged-papers get nibbled by rats like in the movie- My Friend Ganesha.

Prayer has no language/gender/religion.

In the Hindi movie- Joker, Shreyas Talpade's character emotionally converses (in a language that few understand) with God in a temple & gets his brother's  (played by Akshay Kumar) machine to communicate with Aliens!

We may laugh & say all this happens only in the movies.

But, there is so much that modern Science is yet to discover.
Fact is - There is miraculous power in prayer.

When superstar Amitabh Bachchan was seriously injured & hospitalised during the shooting of the Hindi movie- Coolie, all his fans prayed for his life.
Even young fans like me prayed for Amitabh Bachchan and when he recovered, we all thanked God for answering our prayers.

Sometimes prayers are answered. Be careful of what you pray...
In the Hindi movie- Jab Tak Hai Jaan, the heroine makes a deal with God and prays for the hero's life.
He is saved, but she has to stay away from him as she has pledged so...

There is a Mullah Nasruddin story that I had read in Tinkle magazine in my school-days.
Recounting it here from my memory-

Mullah Nasruddin and his friend have an argument.
Mullah says that Prayers & Faith are important, while his friend says Religion & God are important.
There is a new Mosque that comes up after the death of a religious man. The Mullah's friend's wife suffers from a serious disease. Thus, the Mullah's friend religiously worships 'God' for some months in the same Mosque. His wife recovers.
Mullah's friend claims that his wife is saved as he is so religious and his prayers were answered by the wise/religious man of the Mosque.
Then, Mullah Nasruddin reveals that it is he, who had got the Mosque constructed, that too with a donkey's remains & not of any wise/religious man...
Mullah even shows his disbelieving friend the donkey's remains in the Mosque.

Hope, faith, worship & prayers have their effect.

Prayer clears the mist and brings peace back to the soul.” - Rumi

Let us all pray & have faith - Acche din aane waale hain! (Good days will be here!)

  5. having a clean heart is the most important thing. I personally know a lady who worships her deity like anything!! but schemes and prays all the time for the misfortune of others and now, even her own son hates her. So, a prayer is futile if intentions are all wrong.

Even I feel the same. Totally agree with you :)
A clean heart & good thoughts are important. Amount of time spent in prayer makes no sense if it has such negative thoughts.
Terrible that there are people who pray for the misfortunes of others... I feel it'll add up to their bad karma & they will have to pay a heavy price for it...

  6. Beautiful post Anita...though I'm not a strictly religious person but I do respect views and beliefs of other people. I also believe that the positive and negative powers ( God and Satan you may say) reside in our own minds....it's our decision who will become triumphant .... :-)

Yes, certain incidences are like miracles or work of God for the believers & coincidences for the non-believers.
I too boast of the same. It's God's grace.

  18. Wonderful article. Landing on your blog after a long time , sorry for the delay.
This article is one of the powerful article regarding believing in God. From my personal experience i can feel the presence of god. The thing which is required the most is your faith on god the devotion with which you recall him. The facts given by you makes this article an interesting read.
Although there are many atheists surrounding in this world. The presence of god has been scientifically proved. There are many instances for this.
As concluding the comment i remember ond of the famous quotations of Albert Einstein who says
"SCIENCE WITHOUT RELIGION IS LAME, RELIGION WITHOUT SCIENCE IS BLIND".

    wonderful write up.

You are very right. Faith & devotion matters a lot.
The believers get to experience God & perhaps the non-believers do too. if & when they do experience God or His wonders, they too become believers.
Thanks for sharing your views & enriching my post.
