Police & Hindi Cinema

The word 'Police' reminds me of Police in Hindi Movies!

As a HUGE Bollywood Movies fan, I present my views about Police in Hindi Cinema.

From ever since I was very small, I know that the Police always arrives at the climax or 'THE END'! That's when the baddies are bashed up and "Inspector Sahab" handcuffs them & takes them away!

As I have optimism in my DNA, I always believe in and am happy with happy endings!

But, sometimes, to my utter disappointment, I find that Police doesn't arrive on-time & the baddies win...
Worse, the baddies kill the good Police-Man...

In the movie original Don, Iftekhar plays the DSP (Deputy Superintendent of Police), who is the mastermind of a plan to reach to the source of Don's crimes & gets killed leaving the hero Amitabh Bachchan in the lurch...

Sometimes, the Police-Officers are shown to be corrupt & leak out top-secret & extremely sensitive info or indulge in anti-social activities with the Villains.

In the movie Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, Police-Officers played by Mohnish Behl & Asish Vidyarthi are shown to be involved with drug-business & kill the innocent hero played by Hrithik Roshan, who happens to be a witness when they shoot the Police-Commissioner...

In some movies, the Police-Officer is super efficient and risks not only his life but is ready to sacrifice the life of his family-members for the sake of duty, justice & our country. Hail officers!

In the movie Shakti, there is tension between the father & son played by Dilip Kumar & Amitabh Bachchan respectively, ever since the li'l boy of an upright police-officer sees his dad unflinchingly ready to sacrifice his abducted son rather than release the criminal as per the Villain Amrish Puri's demands. The li'l boy is filled with shock that how can a father not love his son...The hatred continues even to adulthood when Amitabh Bachchan becomes a gangster & gets killed by his Police-Officer father.

This movie is shown as a flashback with Dilip Kumar narrating how tough it is to be a Police-Officer when Amitabh Bachchan's son played by Anil Kapoor wants to be a Police-Officer. After listening to his grandfather's story, his grandson still wants to be a Police-Officer.

Deewar poster.jpg

In the movie Deewar, one Police-Officer brother played by Shashi Kapoor shoots and kills his own brother, an Underworld Smuggler, played by Amitabh Bachchan.

Then, there are our heroines playing awe-inspiring female Police Inspectors, who are no less than their male counterparts.
Official Poster of Mardaani.jpg

In the movie Mardaani, Rani Mukherji plays a Senior Inspector of Criminal Branch, Mumbai, who vows to nab the villain about whom she has no clue, in just 30 days.

In the movie Khalnayak, Madhuri Dixit plays a lady Police-Officer, who is an undercover street-girl & gets the Villain played by Sanjay Dutt arrested.
Gunday (2013 film).jpg

In the movie Gunday, Priyanka Chopra plays a lady Police-Officer, who is an undercover cabaret-dancer & sacrifices her love.

In many movies, just the sound of the police-van is enough to set the thieves or criminals scurrying for cover!

In the movie Bunty Aur Bubli, the smart thieves played by Rani Mukherji & Abhishek Bachchan are found running from the cool cop played by Amitabh Bachchan! At the end, they get reformed thanks to the latter's efforts!

In other movies, the very sight or dialogues of Police-Officers makes us smile as a popular comedian plays the character to bring out the laughs!

In the movie Golmaal, popular comedian Om Prakash plays a cool Senior Inspector & gets confused in this tale of lies started by the hero, played by Amol Palekar!

In some movies, the Police-Officer does anything & can achieve the impossible & plays the savior.

In the movie Dabangg 2, Villain's brother is bothering a young girl & threatens her that he'll kidnap her from her marriage-altar. She reports this to Inspector played by Salman Khan, who stops the crime from happening & even kills the Villain's brother & later the Villain.

In the movie Talaash, Police-Officer, Aamir Khan walks into a brothel & rescues a sex-worker from there apart from solving the case of the mystery-deaths...

In other movies, the Police-Officer evokes a strong sense of patriotism.

In the movie Sarfarosh, Aamir Khan plays an ACP (Additional Commisioner Of Police) who joins the IPS despite being eligible to join the IAS. (IPS is ranked lower than the IAS in the hierarchy of the Civil Services.)
He does so as his brother was killed & his father was kidnapped & lost his voice just because they were going to testify against the villains...

Then, there's the romantic angle! The pretty heroine falls for the smart & dashing police-officer!

Zanjeer 1973.jpg

In the movie Zanjeer, Jaya Bachchan plays a Chaaku-Churiya girl (repairs Knives), who falls for angry young man Amitabh Bachchan.

Main Khiladi Tu Anari.jpg

In the movie Main Khiladi Tu Anadi, Shilpa Shetty plays a rural damsel, who falls for Akshay Kumar as the latter sings- 'Churake Dil Mera Goriya Chali' (Stealing my heart the fair-one walks)!

And yet in other movies, the dashing Police-Officer loses out as the heroine loves & marries someone else!
 Kick poster.jpg

In the movie Kick, the heroine played by Jacqueline Fernandes loves the character played by Salman Khan, rather than the cool cop played by Randeep Hooda, who is her father's choice of groom. At the end, Salman Khan is shown joining the Police!

Then, there is the Bollywood Mother (or Father or a Family-Member), who wants her son to be a Police-Officer.

In the movie Phata Poster Nikla Hero, Padmini Kolhapuri is the Bollywood Maa, who ultimately succeeds in fulfilling her dream to see her son played by Shahid Kapoor, as a Police-officer so that he can protect & help everyone.
She names him Vishwaas (Trust). In the movie, his father is shown to be a corrupt policeman. Vishwaas's mother wants him to be everything what his father wasn't...
But, Vishwaas wants to be a Movie-Hero... At the end, Vishwaas realizes his mom's dream and becomes a real-life hero & says NO to a role-offer to be a reel-life-hero!

I can actually go on and on as there are so many Hindi movie Police-Officers in my mind!
(I am a HUGE Hindi Cinema fan, remember? :D)

But, for now, let me end this post with this message-

May the Police do their duty, uphold their responsibility and honor their Uniform so as to evoke fear in the Villains & deter crimes & generate awe & Vishwaas (Trust) in the public & earn our respect.

my fav onscreen policeman characters are Big B in any movie, Aamir in Sarfarosh and Sanjubaba in Kurukshetra. The best fit is the guy who played the role of politicalce officer in Don ( played by Big B).

    2. Thanks for sharing, Manas :)
I haven't watched Kurukshetra. But, Sanjay Dutt has been cast as a Police-Officer in many movies. I remember "Thanedaar" :)
But, Big B was not a Police-Officer in Don. He was a simpleton, who was hired by the DSP to help nab the gangster Don's gang. But, the DSP gets killed and no one else is aware that this Don is not the real Don...

2 reasons why Singham hasn't been included-
      1. I haven't watched it.
      2. Singham has been mentioned by fellow-Blogger Ryan Fernandes in his Post for the same topic.
I had already decided to write on Police the moment I saw the Topic.
When I saw Ryan's post, I decided to skip Singham! Duplication issues :)

    1. Yes, Vinay! You bet! I am a HUGE Amitabh Bachchan fan.
Incidentally, in Don, he doesn't play a Police-Officer, rather is a villager who is assigned the job as he is a look-alike. I mentioned Don as I was very upset when Iftekhar, the DSP, was killed... AB's character was in deep trouble proving himself...
AB's Zanjeer & other movies have him playing proper Police-Officer :)

  22. I think the REAL police needs to be educated and they need to start working for what they are paid for.. saying that I would also say that PUBLIC also needs to know under what difficult scenarios police works, it is not a easy job, although the lure of making quick buck with corruption is OFTEN the thought that comes to mind when someone says I want to join the police.

Hopefully the REAL will soon come in PAR with the REEL (good ones ) I mean .. the Sanjeev kumar of Sholay, THe Shashi kapoor of Deewar

How can you miss Bajirao Singham ???? :)
As most of the comments said we lost respect to Police because of the way it has been portrayed in most of the films. But at the same time we should remember that there are people inside this force who lives for the nation and for the protection of its people.
