Stumped

She was home after a long trip.

There was a new wooden door with pretty sculptures and a new table with elaborate artistic work.
The sculptures seemed to be conversing with her.
What was it?

Her son’s friends placed his fortieth birthday cake on the table.
Despite the celebration, she didn’t know why she felt sad.
To feel better, she went to their garden.

Then, she noticed that her tree was not there in its spot.

She had planted a seed to commemorate her son’s birth…and nurtured it to a fine tree.
It would have been her tree's birthday too…

Have you ever planted a tree? How would you feel if something like this (as in the story) happened to you?

  1. Dear Anita,

At least the tree gave its life to become pretty sculptures. Yes? Nicely done.

  4. Ah, so that's where the door and table came from. Sad that her tree had been felled, but at least the tree had been used for something more than firewood.

  5. I think maybe there was a need for new woodwork.. but somehow I feel this is when life pulls children and mother apart.

  6. This is an interesting one with many layers to it. The part that spoke to me most strongly though is how sometimes the generation to come will take something great and try to improve on it without realizing that they should have asked first. There's something bittersweet and timeless in that. I love how she feels sad without knowing why until she realizes it's the same tree.
