Give Due Credit

They say it mustn't be discussed, it is "small";

Why demean yourself & speak about it at all?

Your crisis may cause unease & discomfort to some!

Revealing secrets like these is NOT welcome!

It is small to speak up & say what you've done,

That's for others to acknowledge; why jump the gun?

But, if you've done great, do people give you the due?

Others stealing your thunder/credit is nothing new!

They shamelessly lift & replicate your words & views!

Copying you, they earn praise, awards & make news!

Unfairly claim it as their "hard work & research"-

Hiding sources & leaving your work in the lurch.

Isn't research about ethics & citing references?

Why doesn't giving due credit make sense?

When we advocate- "Give the devil his due",

Why are those sticking with probity so few?

When someone has recommended & encouraged,

Gone out of the way & for them has staged & waged,

The intellectual thieves have no thoughts or conscience!

For personal gains, they pay no fines for crossing lines!

Claiming all as "mine & our", they extract full share!

Their "name & work" has to be quoted with love & care!

Struck by their impunity & insensitivity, stuck in a deep pit,

They don't even deem it fit to give others their due credit!

I'm often at the crossroads pondering what action to take-

Should I expose them & show they are cheats & fake?

I get busy doing my own work & leaving the rest to God-

She/He is watching everything from Her/His heavenly abode.

Have shared my thoughts earlier about copycats-

Copyrights and Plagiarism- Some Real Life Examples

There are several other "small" things that I have been vocal about, including the usage of the right spellings & terms-

"As to giving credit to whom credit is due, rest assured the best way to do good to one's-self is to do justice to others. There is plenty for everybody in science, and more than can be consumed in our time. One may get a fair name by suppressing references, but the Jewish maxim is true, 'He who seeks a name loses fame.'"
Edward Forbes

Have you faced such a crisis before? What are you stubborn about?

Seen how some people steal the best for themselves? Do you trust in God?

  1. Very unfair indeed! But so inventively written. I like your rhyming.

  2. Credit due to the writer, my statement. As a collage prof I could sense copying most times. Some are both amusing and sad. I did not give a grade to copied work but I would give the student a second chance. A harder assignment or double works before there was a grade. If the punishing work was not completed a zero for a grade, averaged in with the other grades.

  3. Love the message, and the rhyming of your poem.
Indeed, plagiarism and copying is a scourge of this modern world. And AI can make it more complex.

  4. Yes well written. Great message. Years ago, a poet friend stumbled onto a blog where many of our poems resided as if the person had written them. We all started commenting on there. He closed his blog and started somewhere else but we got to him again and it stopped. A shame he didn't get the message. It is stealing.

  5. Nicely done, Anita. You've written about something we are all concerned with, especially with the threat of AI swallowing up and regurgitating our words.
