The Eldest Sibling

She had been told to take care; also, all the blame!

"You've called them, and to our home they came!"

She felt guilty for inviting so many across the seas!

She thought of herself as the stork that gets babies!

Being the eldest, she always faced what they never did.

She matured & graduated even when she was a kid.

Whatever the siblings did was all fine for happiness.

Whatever she did, she gave her family tensions & stress!

Then, after some years, she simply disappeared into thin air.

Did her siblings look for & after her with the same love & care?

They had taken everything from her- right from ideas to experience,

She did not matter anymore. Her life or services made no more sense.

Do you feel the eldest sibling in a family is the most responsible?

  1. I'd say elder siblings tend to be raised to be more compliant with family rules and sacrificing/adjusting than the younger kids. Not all are able to carry that sense of responsibility and 'parent-like' aura all the way through though.

I guess you're the eldest among your siblings...I am too :)

  2. Ha, I was the elder sibling, the eldest of all the extended family of cousins, and the eldest of the neighbourhood kids. I can't t ell you how tired I got of being told by the adults, whenever anything went wrong: 'YOU'RE the oldest. YOU should have known better!' I felt your poem keenly, Anita.

  3. Anita, I also am the eldest of three daughters and have always felt the unspoken pressure to do "the right thing" for just that reason. Certainly thru 84 years of living, I have let more than a few down. Really enjoyed reading your poetry.
