Both my Granny & Grandma are responsible for shaping the story-teller in me as they told me many real-life stories about people they had personally interacted with.
One story of my Granny was about a woman who loved to eat 'Pakoras' (fried snacks) a lot and every evening, she would buy lots of Pakoras from the neighborhood shop.
Pakoras |
In another story, there was this man from an extremely rich family, who didn't like to work and just ate and slept and enjoyed the wealth!
The end-result for both these stories was the same as the woman's husband's money and the man's wealth and riches got finished and they got ruined and their life was in ruins...

I learnt many morals & lessons from my Granny's stories that influenced my life as I vowed to be judicious & money-conscious & not 'buy outside food frequently' or simply 'sit and eat', else as my Granny warned by citing an Odia proverb- "Basi Khaile Nai Bali Sare".
(ବସିଖାଇଲେ ନଈବାଲି ସରେ- If you sit & eat, even the river's sand will be over!
Meaning- Riches will run out if one is lazy, does not work and simply eats/enjoys. Laziness brings ruin. Indolence results in poverty.)
This is a story for the Five Sentence Fiction- Ruins & IndiSpire Edition-5

Granny's are the storehouses of wisdom and knowledge. I too remember some of the stories from my granny. The lesson you shared here is however, the one which my mother teaches me.
ReplyDeleteTrue Namrata. Granny told the story. But, Granny had told the same story to Mom too. Mom made sure to remind it to me :) That's why the lessons had their impact!
DeleteMay we be blessed with such invaluable lessons that guide us.
Yes, Ashwini. We are indeed lucky. Great stories- mythology & real-life with lessons.

Granny stories always wise and worthy, witty and well said. Similar proverb in Hindi goes as "Khali baithe Kuber ka Khazana bhi khali ho jaata hai.." OR if you simply sit and eat even Lord Kubera's Treasure will become empty. Money wise and time conscious :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Kokila for sharing the cool Hindi proverb. Just imagine- Lord Kubera's wealth getting over! :) Grannies know how to warn us & make us wise :)
