Odisha GI Authorised User Camp By NHDC

Each year, on August 1st, we celebrate Sambalpuri Din and wear Sambalpuri Bandha, an iconic weave of Odisha that has the Geographical Indication (GI) tag and is also recognized by UNESCO.
The 13th Sambapuri Din i.e. Sambalpuri Day is being celebrated today.

It was a great honour to attend and address the GI Camp with Sambalpuri Bandha weavers three days ago, thanks to the National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC).

Even shared about Sambalpuri Din in my presentation!

Khandua or Sambalpuri? Sab Chalta Hai?

UK-based marathon-runner Odia woman, Ms Madhusmita Jena Das, ran the Manchester Marathon dressed in a traditional Khandua Saree last Sunday i.e. on 16th April 2023.

Her marathon participation images and videos are now viral. She has earned praise for her beautiful traditional Khandua silk Saree that she had worn while participating in the Manchester Marathon.

Misrepresentation of Her Saree

Those who have followed this news or search it online will find that- the name of her saree has been shared by most as “Sambalpuri”.

Sambalpuri is a type of Bandha Kala or art of tie-and-dye i.e. Ikat handloom being woven in some districts of western Odisha, India.

However, Madhusmita Jena Das’s saree is not a Sambalpuri Saree.

Rather, it is a Khandua Saree.

Sambalpuri Bandha Saree And Fabrics #OdishaGI #KnowYourGI #GIsofIndia

Odisha has a rich tradition and history of handicrafts and handlooms. As per historians, handloom weaving in Odisha dates to 600 BC. Human figures sculpted on the centuries old temples reflect stylistic draping of clothes.

The Odisha "tie and dye” fabrics and sarees are called "Bandha".
They are also popularly known as "Ikat" in India. The meaning of Bandha and Ikat in Odia and Malay languages respectively is the same- to tie or wind.
According to historians, Bandha is Odisha state’s heritage and historical maritime trade link with Indonesia.
The warp or weft or both are tied and then dyed as per the pre-planned designs. Then, these threads are used for weaving. The designs seem the same on both side of the fabrics.

Odisha Sambalpuri Products

I was happy & felt special when Team BlogAdda shortlisted me for the Quikr activity.
I had to shop for Rs 5000 using Quikr and then blog about my experience.

But, then, I was also very concerned.
This was because of my not-so-good experience with two leading online-shopping sites in the recent past. Shopping with one, I have paid higher price for the products & in the other, I am yet to receive the product I have ordered 5 weeks ago.

Thus, for this online-shopping activity with Quikr, where the time-frame to submit the post was less than a week, I expressed my inability based on the fact that the product may not even reach me! How will I blog about my experience then?

My concern was proved wrong as I learnt many Lessons from Quikr:

Lesson#1-
Team BlogAdda advised that I should pick product(s) from Seller(s) based in my city or near my city so that the process is expedited & is QUICKER!

I logged on to Quikr.
