Tempted

I always looked forward to visits to my Granny's place during my School's Summer-holidays. It was real fun as all my cousins also came and we had a gala time.
Granny's favorite words were - Eat & Sleep!
Granny was a great cook and ensured that we all ate yummy food.
She also wanted us to sleep in the afternoon so that she, my grandfather and the rest of the elders could enjoy their afternoon siesta.

But, we never slept and indulged in all sorts of fun activities. When our excitement levels made our voices loud, Granny would warn us to keep the volume down!

Granny made excellent pickles. She would add spices to the cut raw mangoes and put them out in the sun to dry.

Seeing the open treasure in front, I was tempted to sample the half-made pickles.
Ditto was the case with all my cousins!

As we all collectively yielded to our temptation, one afternoon, our army finished off the entire collection that Granny had left out in the sun to dry!

You should have seen her face when she woke up from her afternoon nap and let out a cry of shock & surprise!

"You kids have just finished off so many jars of future-pickles! You will have stomach-upsets..."

Seeing Granny's concern that we might have upset-tummies, I was tempted to inform her that we had even finished her entire bottle of Chooran!

Time for more shock & surprise!

It seems kids were permitted only one Chooran ball per day & we had gobbled up innumerable ones without counting!

Learnt a lesson for life- Take care of temptation!

  5. I loved it! I know its true as i have also experienced the summer afternoons where grandparents want the children to sleep, but children don't care about the temperature and want to explore the world outside home! And doing something forbidden in your grandparents home is always an enjoyable experience.

  17. Beautiful post about two associated activities (freaking out on raw mango pieces being sun-dried and then freaking out on choorans, etc.) that many have indulged in as children.

  18. This year here in my hometown we have a good mango season and my mom has made all types of mango pickles. I will wait for weekends so that I can come home and taste all these mango pickles. My mother pickles has saved me when I was working outside. Rice+curd+pickle made my lunch... :)
